Description

A person needs B vitamins every day, because they are water-soluble (not oil-soluble like Vitamin E). This means any extra cannot be stored by the body and is simply excreted in the urine. The exception to this rule is Vitamin B-12, which gets stored in the liver.*

Functions of the Vitamin B Complex

Different B Vitamins are needed for different functions of the body. Some of these functions are*:

  • Adrenal gland functions
  • Better sleep
  • Nervous system functions
  • Digestion
  • Carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism
  • Energy production, by helping metabolize foods into fuel
  • Functions of the immune system
  • Healthy skin, hair, nails, and mucous membranes
  • Anti-oxidant activity to eliminate free radicals
  • Red blood cell and hemoglobin production and health of the circulatory system
  • Hormone production
  • Regulation of blood sugar levels
  • Brain health and development
  • Regulation of homocysteine levels in the blood
  • Normal embryonic growth in pregnant women
  • DNA production, especially during times of rapid growth (infancy, adolescence, pregnancy)

Timing your Intake

While some of the Vitamin B complex (such as B-1 and B-6) provide aid for sleep, that does not mean that they need to be taken before bedtime. The functions that aid sleep are ongoing, providing the nutrition that the body needs for natural sleep cycles; they are not to be confused with herbs or medicines that create drowsiness. Some of the functions that are assisted by B vitamins and that promote better sleep are the health of the adrenal glands, rapid eye-movement sleep, and the production of melatonin.*

In fact, since B Vitamins also aid energy production, it might be better to take them in the morning, so that sleep is not interfered with!*

Always take B Vitamins with a meal, since on an empty stomach, much will simply pass through your system and be wasted.*
