Description
American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) grows natively in North America. It contains saponins similar to those found in oriental ginseng. American ginseng, however, is considered to be a yin tonic herb, especially nourishing to the skin, stomach, and lungs (which is where its reputation for increasing endurance comes from). It is also an adaptogenic herb, providing alertness, energy, and adaptability.*
The wild variety is considered to be far superior to the cultivated.
Because American ginseng, unlike the Asian variety, is a cool herb, it is useful for people who are hot (with lots of energy, high metabolisms, aggression, high blood pressure, ruddy complexions, etc.), but who wish to take ginseng for its adaptogenic benefits. The Asian variety would be more likely to cause overheating in such individuals. In this way, American ginseng may help to moisten and cool the lungs, balance out the system, and correct overheating, especially in the stomach and lungs.*
American ginseng is also known for increasing the secretion of bodily fluids; thus it is helpful for a dry cough.*
This single herb tincture is bottled in amber glass and available in many sizes. The one-, two-, and four-ounce bottles each include a glass dropper.
