Moroccan Argan Oil

As nature’s anti-aging skin product, argan oil has been known by Moroccans for hundreds of years.  It is so versatile that it can be used for skin, hair, nails and even as a delicious culinary delight.  Since argan oil is produced almost solely by women’s cooperatives in Morocco, purchasing this product directly contributes to the empowerment of local women’s groups.  The region is also protected under UNESCO because the argan forest is slowly shrinking with the encroachment of the desert and other environmental stresses.  Efforts are being taken to stave off the destruction of these ancient trees.

Argan oil is produced by manually grinding the nuts into an oily paste and then extracting the oil.  This is a slow and time-consuming process that Berber women do by hand in small groups. The selling of the product is coordinated by cooperatives and sold in local markets.
