The Culprits
According to the New York Times, the New York Attorney General led an investigation into the quality of generic herbal supplements from Wal-Mart, GNC, Target, and Walgreens. Three hundred ninety DNA tests on seventy-eight different products found that 4 out of 5 supplements contained no trace of the herbs listed on the label and instead contained fillers made from processed wheat, rice, beans, or houseplants. Since the conclusion of this investigation, the Attorney General has issued cease and desist letters to all four of the major retailers included in the study, and thousands of falsified herbs have been taken down from store shelves.
