Description

Niacin is a member of the Vitamin B complex and is often referred to as Vitamin B3. Since it is water-soluble, it is not stored in the body, and therefore must be regularly replenished through the diet or supplementation.

Niacin assists these bodily functions:

  • Energy production*
  • The nervous system
  • The circulatory  system*

Can niacin be made by the body?

Yes and no. The body can make niacin from the amino acid, tryptophan, but only if there are also present sufficient amounts of vitamin B1, B2 and B6!

More about how niacin works:

Niacin plays an essential role in metabolizing proteins, fats and carbohydrates, aiding in their conversion into the simplest form of energy, glucose, and in producing glycogen, which is a starch stored in muscles and the liver for later use.

Niacin also contributes to nerve and brain function and aids in the making of hydrochloric (digestive) acid as well as many hormones.

Studies indicate that niacin may help to:

  • Lower levels of LDL cholesterol (which is the cholesterol you don’t want too much of)
  • Reduce triglycerides
  • Improve the condition of choroidal blood vessels in the eye. (When these blood vessels are in poor condition, macular degeneration may result.)
