Description
For centuries, traditional health practitioners have used topical preparations of goldenrod (Solidago canadensis) to treat inflammation of the mouth or throat as well as to alleviate the discomfort of slow-healing wounds and itching, reducing pain and swelling, and also rubbed into aching muscles and joints.
Today, goldenrod is used as an aquaretic agent, meaning that it promotes the loss of water from the body (as compared to a diuretic, which promotes the loss of both water and electrolytes such as salt).
The scientific name for goldenrod is Solidago canadensis. The name solidago means “to make whole.”
The goldenrod plant does not cause hay fever. Unlike ragweed and grass pollen, its pollen is harmless to humans, because the particles of goldenrod pollen are simply too heavy to be blown by the wind or carried on the air. Goldenrod’s highly-colored flowers attract insects that are sensitive to color and these carry off the large grains of pollen.
